Zosima / w OAKE rmxs - "Metamorphosis" - 12" LP (Noiztank) $18 SGD SOLD OUT (Available for Pre-Order)

What we know as avant-garde seems to look back every time more to the past. An aim of finding new reinterpretations produces deeper and deeper researches into the most primary roots of electronic music, but actually that conflict between old and new is gone. Then, what does it mean a radical idea versus the image of a radical idea? Whether something is genuinely radical is so only if it hasn’t been done, or is difficult to do, or the results are uncertain, which is different from reproducing years later what the discipline learned to do in former times. The struggle to implement and to understand new work, as a valued act of conduct is very different from repeating a learned image.
This dichotomy founded the basics of Zosima's original tracks. The sequence continues with two OAKE's remixes and it is closed by a narrative of divine ectasy. A monstrous sensuality, that takes you to the end without noticing it.
"Metamorphosis" shows the birth, life and death of a musical body.

Ontal - "Simulacron" - (Amok Tapes) Cassette $18 SGD

Ontal is a collaborative project which consists of Boris Brenecki and Darko Kolar, both hailing from Serbia. They focus on the bleakest, blackest apocalyptic techno and grinding mechanoid rhythms. Formed in November 2011 and influenced by numerous music genres, their sound can be described as an uncompromising, hard and intense assault. Breathing new life in the industrial strains of techno and the darker realms of the dancefloor and mind.
"Simulacron" is an extreme exercise in analog synth arpeggios and industrial drumming. In addition, the cassette comes with two exclusive sequences.

Bakunin Commando - "Bakunin Commando"(Amok Tapes) - Cassette $18 SGD

Bakunin Commando is a side project of Francesco Baudazzi (Violet Poison) debuting with this C26 cassette. Musically oriented on “1984-alike weird minimal/EBM tapes”, those squatter-alike 1980’s obscure home-tapes’s filth, those one that used to go along with fetish comics by Eric Stanton or Bill Ward. Key elements are nonsense vocals, nervous laughs, hysterical tiny screams and usage of distorted, damaged proto-EBM sequences that join 80’s Industrial-alike beats. Fetish dadaism - heavily sexual and deranged - punk nonsense and female domination are the main inspirations.

Noumeno - "The Phantom"(Haunter Records) - Cassette  $20 SGD SOLD OUT (Available for Pre-Order)

Through the eyes of Stefano K. Testa AKA Noumeno, anxiety shows its fractal nature, its ever-revealing DNA of contradictory micro-emotions, body stimuli and thoughts. Music is his way of processing and exposing this hypercomplexity, crudely exposing the feeling of being haunted by uncertainty and finite knowledge. Assembling piles of granular noisy harmonics as fuel for a rhythmicality on the verge of digital chaos, he uses sporadic bits of muffled melodies as a realistic revisiting of human horror. His gothic roots are turned into futuristic neuroses by bits of decomposed grime, industrial-like heaviness and saturated bass. Recorded through the course of several months in Berlin and Milan, it is Testa’s first ever release, also hosting a densely droning rework by Contort alumnus WSR.

(Crucial Blast) cd $28 SGD

cover

Taming the Cannibals, the sophomore full-length from avant-black / death / doom band Ehnahre, is one of the more cerebral and challenging death metal albums to come through the Crucial Blast headquarters this year. Featuring former members of prog / gothic art-rockers Kayo Dot and avant-death metalists Biolich, the Boston-based group unleashes extreme chaotic dissonance and pitch-black chthonic textures--a combination of atonal 20th-century classical music and vicious blackened death laced with stretches of intense choral ambience and blasts of calcifying, glacial doom.

Ehnahre - Douve SOLD OUT (Available for Pre-Order)
(Kathexis) cd $30 sgd

cover
Ehnahre new release, Douve, pushes things even farther into the muddy perimeter, incorporating elements of contemporary classical music, serialism, free improvisation, aleatory, free meter, noise and other experimental techniques. An 18 part cycle based on poet Yves Bonnefoy’s Theatre, the record is a window into the distressed mind of a man as he observes the death and decay of his metaphorical beloved, the “watcher of the cold secret”. Employing a dizzying variety of timbres, instruments, moods and stylistic homages, the album ranges from the delicate shimmer of piano overtones to full-bore metal howl, its emotional intensity only overcome by the density of its harmonies. Sometimes beautiful, frequently disgusting, Douve is not only an aural narrative, but a display of the group’s radical evolution.

November Pain

cover
Ron Morelli - A Gathering Together LP (Hospital Productions) $55 SGD
SOLD OUT (Available for Pre-Order)
A Gathering Together is RON MORELLI's second full-length for Hospital Productions: a ‘techno’ cacophony brought to its granular detail and reduced to its most elemental tonal depths. A cohesive fusion of surreal and feverish deja vu loops, brittle noise, fucked rhythms, scrap metal percussions, pro-one metal synths, and an injection of near-buried, Drano vocal samples, it’s a fearsome celebration of brokenness, of amplified surroundings. Stereo-shifting drones and driving rhythms that tell the stories of those now gone, more a soundtrack for a wake than 4/4 crafted for the dancefloor. There’s a naked anxiety at work that doesn’t turn away from loss, but runs with an excited melancholy that looks to a future that won’t exist. The boldness of the gestures are not to be confused with exuberance.

Listen - A Gathering Together

cover
Exoteric Continent - Referandum LP(Hospital Productions) $55 SGD (Pre-Order)
Exoteric Continent draws the listener into the awkward spaces and styles around the shifting, jagged borders of techno and noise, using drums, percussion, magnetic tape, and synthesizers to outline nine atonal and enigmatic silhouettes. The work ranges from the creeping slow-techno misshape of "Percentages" thru the sagging chamber feeling of "Posicions" to the Soisong-like gamelan tones of "Transició" and the kinky industrial swing instincts of "La Mirada Llarga"; he mixes rugged structures with stranger, keening electronics in the insectoid logic of "Autoritat" and the rubbled electro-acoustic texturhythm of "Agrupació Civil" to forge a fractious, unstable brace of noise techno that sits somewhere between classic Pan Sonic and his Hospital lablemate Alberich. Cut at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. Edition of 500.

cover
Oneohtrix Point Never - Replica LP (Software) $50 SGD SOLD OUT (Available for Pre-Order)
Replica is an electronic song cycle based around audio procured from TV ad compilations. These sample-based meditations are as lyrical as they are ecological, featuring re-purposed "ghost vocals" which serve as narration for DANILE LOPATIN’s signature amorphous, ambient passages. Lopatin's Juno-60 is still prominent, but Returnal's placid, synthetic surroundings are accelerated through darker, more unpredictable terrains via Lopatin's use of samplers, analog filtering, tape-op, piano, plate reverb and sub-bass. The result is a heightened sense of music as part and parcel of an overall sonic terrain. Vinyl edition of 1,000 hand-numbered and spot varnished copies.

Nick Forté - Primodial Forms LP (Amish) $55 SGD
SOLD OUT (Available for Pre-Order)
Forté is one of the most innovative and overlooked figures in contemporary experimental and extreme music, though those aware of his discography recognize the arch and foundational significance of his work. Primordial Forms is NICK FORTE's most demanding and conceptual work to date with five pieces that comprise the record, Forté created five one-second sounds on his computer based purely on the visual appeal of the waveform. He made these waveforms with the speakers off. These visually appealing forms became the seeds for the pieces on the record. With the speakers turned back on, Forté then turned these discrete sound units into long form music through a slow and deliberate process of looping, editing, and manipulation. The entire record was made in a pirated version of Sound Forge from the late '90s.

Slogun - I will bury you! LP (Peripheral) $56 SGD (Pre-order)

Ambarchi/O'Malley/Dunn - Shades Theme Form 2xLP (Drag City)$65 SGD (Pre-Order)
Shade Themes From “Kairos” is a new iteration of the dream for all the guitar freaks out there, bringing together a couple of singular players together, just to see what happens. In this case, the players were old friends and collaborators OREN AMABARCHI and STEPHEN O’MALLEY, playing in a space engineered and co-populated by RANDALL DUNN. The Shade album began in 2009, when Belgian filmmaker ALEXIS DESTOOP asked Ambarchi and O’Malley to score his short feature, “Kairos.” Randall Dunn was their first and best choice to record and co-produce the music—and as the session progressed, all three men found themselves acting as a trio to bring the music. And in the end, this album was made by a trio of players. Decamped in an old radio station in Kortrijk, Belgium, they filled a bare, stripped live broadcast room with the needed equipment as well as other amazing old pieces made available by the gearheads of the European lowlands. With guitars, drums, analog synthesizers, vibes, crotales, Sruti box and a mellotron, deep emanations were evoked, while other spirits emerged from the old wooden sound panels in the room—the ghosts of music makers past? It will suffice to say that all who were there contributed something. The soundtrack was completed—but the vast space they’d discovered together required deeper investigation. Ambarchi, O’Malley and Dunn determined to go further with the music, reconvening back at Randall’s ALEPH Studio in Seattle (now R.I.P.), where further recording and mixing was done.

Jim Haynes - Scarlet CASSETTE (Helen Scarsdale Agency) $15 SOLD OUT (Available for Pre-Order)
Jagged bursts of strobe lights. Cackling radio signals bristling with interference. Sawtooth patterns of tactile noise. Torn flesh. Scabbed wounds. These are some of the building blocks to Jim Haynes' Scarlet. This crucible of unkempt rhythm and noise-pulse turbulence was decomposed and sutured together from the various sources of electromagnetic and psychic detritus into an unstable mutation of sequential error. The eight tracks of Scarlet stand as vastly radical and obsessive variations on the theme of repetition through trauma. Each of the tracks may have begun with the same system of building blocks, but quickly spiral into disparate orbits, time-lag accumulation, tunnel-vision mania, schizoid detours, amplified seances, and teleological endgames. This strategy of rupture and release was first noted on Haynes' 2012 album The Wires Cracked, but has become all the more unhinged here on Scarlet. The analog tone generation and shambolic futurism harken to an earlier era of industrial immolation, with Haynes' echolalia of Le Syndicat, Mika Vainio, and Martin Rev stridently tracing and electrically bleaching the forms of those antecedents without the benefit of drum machine, sequencer, and whatnot. Bruitisme, indeed.

Lx Sweat - Sweat Sweat Sweat CASSETTE (Not Not Fun) $15 SGD SOLD OUT (Available for Pre-Order)
Given that we're living in the age of the come-back, one terrain we’ve been extra-pleased to see get resurrected and siphoned through the stargate of cassette-crud mutation is hypno R&B. A significant cut of global listeners can count the style as one of their formative musical memories, so there’s nothing shallow or ironic about its recent reappropriation in alien-ized bedroom beat scenes (regardless of what blog conservatives post to the contrary). All of which is joyously confirmed and celebrated in the retro-futurist exoskeletons scavenged and funkified by Germany’s one-man groove merchant LX Sweat. Screwed Up Click backing tracks are stacked high with sci-fi vocoder-soul vox, lush synthesizer counter melodies, and classic echo/reverb unit studio trickery for a production that’s vaguely reminiscent of Barry-White-on-morphine-transmitted-through-a-fax-machine-to-a-low-wattage-pirate-radio-station. Steamy, disembodied bubble baths of endorphin slow-rides and pleasure crunk. Excellent shit, and only the beginning for this inspired dude.

More Death in June! Additional Picks for the month

Ancient Sky - Mosaic LP(Wharfcat) $40 SGD

Mosaic is a new statement of purpose for ANCIENT SKY and a record that defines the band as one of Brooklyn’s heaviest & most dynamic units. It is the sound of a band revitalized. With the addition of ADAM BULGASEM as second drummer, PAT BRODERICK's signature swing hits even harder. KEVIN LAMIELL & BRANDON EVANS add bass & keys respectively, leaving main-man BRIAN MARKHAM to handle the singular guitar, one that riffs & drones in classic Ancient Sky form. From metallic street punk, to swinging celestial psych, to the crunching terror blues, this is a band showing that maturity means knowing your strengths and also knowing how to keep pushing it.  Bosse-De-Nage - IIi 2 xLP ( Flesner) $55 / SOLD OUT
NOW AVAILABLE ON VINYL!!! Received a 7.9 rating from Pitchfork. Little is known about Bay Area enigma BOSSE-DE-NAGE, since the band rarely plays live, doesn’t disclose its membership, or partake in promotional activities like interviews or promo photos. Nonetheless, the four-piece has a solid and distinct repertoire at their disposal. A cassette demo (released by Aesop Dekker of Agalloch / Worm Ouroboros / Ludicra fame) and two full-length albums (on Flenser Records) have made an impression within the underground, and the band’s vitriolic mix of minimal black metal, indie rock and post-punk has garnered reviews describing them as a black metal version of the legendary Slint. Their latest album titled simply III, is the most sophisticated and introspective Bosse-De-Nage release to date—one of the most powerful collisions of indie rock and black metal you’ll hear this year. LP limited to 500 copies.  Listen - III

Kwaidan -Make All The Hell of Dark Metal Bright LP (Bathetic) $36 SGD / SOLD OUT (Available for Pre-Order)

Bathetic is pleased to bring to the masses, Make All The Hell Of Dark Metal Bright, the debut long player from KWAIDAN. This project brings together MIKE WEISS (ZELIONPLE), ANDRE FOISY (LOCRIAN), and NEIL JENDON—when you look at a line-up like this, it's easy to see how important and profound the outcome will be. Heavy, lumbering, and dense, Make All The Hell Of Dark Metal Bright is a sprawling affair with a foggy aesthetic—bleak, but beautiful and all-surrounding. Pass it off as a simplistic drone album? Never. This is high-art, utilizing minimalistic percussion, swirling beats pulsate, a trance takes hold. Guitar and piano come forth from behind a wall of electric vibrance. So precisely put together, these layers form a pattern; pull your eyes away and it's all a great swirling grey of splendor. Listen - *Excerpts from the album

Mamaleek - Via Dolorosa LP (Flesner) $40 SGD SOLD OUT (Available for Pre-Order)

The fifth album from Bay Area weirdos Mamaleek, Via Dolorosa is the duo’s darkest and most experimental release, incorporating black metal, psychedelia and electronic music. It is also the first Mamaleek record featuring live drums. At once harsh, frightening and beautiful, Via Dolorosa is like an evening at the darkest jazz club as it might appear in the depths of a child’s fever dream. Though the group’s two anonymous brothers hail from the San Francisco Bay Area and their work is rife with themes of death and nihilism, musically they stand apart from the city’s most well-known black metal exports (Weakling, Leviathan, et al.)

Nurse With Wound’s Lumb’s Sister has been newly remastered from the original analog tapes by Denis Blackham.  “This music was originally conceived as raw material for the film project Lumb’s Sister by Chris Wallis. Uniform - Perfect World LP (12XU) $36 SGD/ SOLD OUT (Available for Pre-Order)

UNIFORM formed in New York City in late 2013 when old friends BEN GREENBERG (HUBBLE, THE MEN, PYGMY SHREWS) and MICHAEL BERDAN (YORK FACTORY COMPLAINT, DRUNKDRIVER, BELIEVER/LAW) realized they lived on the same street. Their impulsive collaboration quickly yielded "Our Blood" / "Of Sound Mind and Body" single. The six tracks that comprise the equally abrasive but more refined Perfect World have been coming together between tours and work ever since. The music that Greenberg and Berdan conjure up under the Uniform moniker is immediate, aggressive, and even primal in form, but it plumbs untold depths. Berdan’s venomous voice mines deeply personal themes of resentment, regret, reflection and addiction over the hum of Greenberg’s almost impossibly disciplined guitar, bass synth, and drum machine lines. Greenberg uses the word “templatized” to describe their approach to writing songs for Uniform.   “There’s this set bunch of gear to create sounds, and it only creates sound through a certain process, or within its own limitations,” Greenberg said. “The goal of songwriting is to see how many different kinds of sounds you can get from the same basic process and machine.”   On Perfect World, that machine is firing on all cylinders. The guitar is run through a cheap ’80s preamp marketed to metal kids. The drum machine is equally no-frills, an Akai XR20 that Greenberg says “most people wouldn’t want to keep around.” These humble components are combined with noisy synth and Berdan’s profound howling to form something much greater. Post-punk, synthpunk, and industrial traditions are borrowed from as needed, but the constraints placed on the process mean the result is unique to Uniform. Berdan describes his lyrics as the consequence of feeling “so full of pain, confusion, deep selfishness, and general animosity that you make some horrible mistakes and have to learn how to forgive yourself for them.” 'Perfect World' feels like the sum of all that pain and confusion, but it also feels like the catharsis. Listen - Perfect World

While not totally abandoning the beat-driven sound that made their debut so great, we find them now much more willing to break out of the traditional song structure. Side A is 10-plus minutes of ambient composition that is a natural departure from their previous work. Side B is considerably more akin to their release on Mannequin, retaining the horror meets Knight Rider vibe. Side note for all you heads out there–this record features the classic sounds of the KR55 drum machine.
